Some of our mumsjustlove team use cloth nappies during the day and an Eco-Disposable nappies through the night. So why make the move to cloth nappies? Lets get off the eco debate first & take a look at reliability…

Most mums comment that when using a disposable nappy like huggies they are amazed at how the poo is all over babies bottom. With the right cloth nappy it seems poo is more contained, mainly due to a snugger fit.
Do they really add to the washing load?
Well you could argue that leaks from disposables cause extra washing. Yes you need to wash cloth nappies but if you get the right quantity this does not need to be a chore.
Are they better for a baby/childs health?
Disposable nappies contain up to 200 chemicals. It is still unknown how many are absorbed through a baby’s skin. In theory yes cloth nappies are better as they are not inflicting any chemicals/gels onto your babies skin! Some of the mumsjustlove team said they were more in tune with their babies motions (thats poo to you and me!). We can only presume this is becuase there is no chemical reaction with the cloth nappy.
Do they reduce nappy rash?
There is no hard evidence to say any type of nappy can reduce nappy rash!
So are they more cost effective?
Lets say 6 nappy changes in any 24 hours, and assume you need 2 years till your child is potty trained. 16p is roughly the price of a nappy (we averaged Huggies from birth to pre pull up state). That means you will spend around £700 on nappies. Cloth nappies and liners will set you back about £450. The Real Nappy Association quote about £33 per year as an average for laundry costs. So finacially there is a strong case for cloth.
Lastly yes cloth nappies are more eco-friendly than disposable nappies. Nearly 3 billion disposable nappies are thrown away each year, as a results add 1 million tonnes of nappy waste to our already overfull landfill sites. They then take up to 500 years to decompose.
The Minefield Which Is Cloth Nappies! The cloth nappy industry is booming, adding more confusion to a mum but fear not here is the mumsjustlove quick quide…
Flat Nappies & Muslin Cloths are a style of nappy that requires some folding like the traditional terry square, muslin square or cotton prefold nappy. Terry squares are usually fastened with nappi nippas or pins while a prefold is folded into a pad and held in place in a suitable waterproof outer liner.
Sized Nappies are a shaped nappy that require more than one size from birth to potty (usually 2 or 3 sizes). Made from a variety of materials including, cotton terry, bamboo, hemp or waffle cotton. These usually fasten with poppers, some do require a waterproof outercover so be sure to check each brand.
Birth to Potty Nappies OR One Sized Nappies are like the above in the fact they are a shaped nappy but these fit your baby from birth to potty (8-35lb approx). Fastenings are often poppers or velcro these also usually require a waterproof cover.
Stuffables/Pocket Nappies. These are a waterproof outer with a fleece lined pouch where you stuff something absorbent inside, such as terry nappy/prefold, hemp or microfiber insert like a liner. Once the absorbent insert is in place pocket nappies are very easy to use. No additional waterproof cover is required. Available in different sizes, 2 or 3 are usually required, or a birth to potty nappy. Fastening with either popper or velcro.
